Network file systems are an elegant way to make data accessible to various participants who are working together on a project. They are easy to use, automatically scale in the cloud with the amount of data stored and offer impressive access speeds. As such, they combine the advantages of object storage (high scalability) with those of elastic volume storage (fast data access). Moreover, users can use the storage space with ease.

Scalable File Service in the Open Telekom Cloud

With the Scalable File Service, the Open Telekom Cloud supplements the Elastic Volume Service and the Object Storage Service with a network file service based on OpenStack Manila. Thanks to the additional logic of the NFSv3 protocol, the network file service is accessible across various availability zones from different virtual machines. The storage space is not connected directly to the Elastic Cloud Server as an SCSI would be, but rather indirectly via the network.

Like object storage, it grows flexibly and automatically in accordance with the system requirements, meaning that it is not necessary to order a certain amount of storage space in advance. It scales up to 512 TB, with the relevant bandwidth for communication with the service growing correspondingly up to a maximum of 2.5 GBit/s. However, network storage offers higher performance than object storage. Just like the Object Storage Service (OBS), the Scalable File Service is billed using a pricing scale.
