Elastic Volume Service (EVS)

Dynamic hard disk space for cloud applications

In clouds, both storage and computing resources are decoupled from the associated hardware. This means that typical hardware restrictions (e.g. storage limits due to the physical limits of the disk) do no longer apply. Hard disk-based storage space is also known as volume storage or block storage and makes up another basic component of a cloud.

Elastic Volume Service in the Open Telekom Cloud

The Elastic Volume Service (EVS) is offered in five performance classes to meet different input/output speed requirements: SATA, SAS and SSD. SATA interfaces cover the requirements of normal data exchange rates (I/O rates), while SAS and SSD interfaces are used for higher requirements. In addition, there are two performance-optimized SAS and SSD variants to enable higher data throughput. Up to 32 TB of data can be stored on such a virtual hard disk, and up to 60 such disks can be assigned to an Elastic Cloud Server. The system disks of the virtual machines are also based on the EVS. Block storage must always be connected to a virtual machine – in contrast to object storage, which can also be used as a standalone storage medium. With shared EVS, it is possible to connect an EVS volume to up to 16 different VMs, with faster data exchange than when using object storage. The EVS encryption feature allows data to be encrypted in the block storage. The prices are based on the performance class and the amount of storage space provided per month (in GB). As long as the storage has not been deleted, the storage capacity provided is also billed even if the instance connected to the elastic volume storage has been stopped.
