Backup and recovery functions are an important part of cloud setups that ensure high availability. In particular, backing up entire virtual servers (Cloud Server Backup Service, CSBS) and hard disk volumes (Volume Backup Service, VBS) are central components of a security concept. With the Cloud Backup and Recovery Service (CBR), the Open Telekom Cloud is now offering a new service that combines the two functions and makes it even easier for users to manage their backups.
CBR can be controlled via a shared console. To do this, users first create a vault that will contain the backups. With the option to limit the size of the vault, the resulting costs can be better calculated and limited. For each vault, administrators set so-called policies that, for example, determine the frequency of backups.
The new service is available in addition to the existing CSBS and VBS, both of which will continue to exist. Users can still use the old consoles. However, a resource can only ever be managed by one policy. So if you want to use CBR on an existing volume, you have to remove an existing policy beforehand.
The service is offered as part of the Open Telekom Cloud's experimental beta program. As before, the extended backups are billed according to the used storage space in GB. Feedback can be left in the Open Telekom Cloud community portal. More information about the CBR service is available in the Open Telekom Cloud Helpcenter or in the service description.
