Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Quickly build secure hybrid cloud environments

The Open Telekom Cloud Virtual Private Network (VPN) Solution establishes an encrypted communication tunnel between a user customer location or Data Center and a Virtual Private Cloud (VPC). With a VPN, you can securely connect to a VPC and access service resources in it.

By default, ECSs in a VPC cannot communicate with your data center or private network. To enable communication between them, it is recommended to use a VPN, which consists of a VPN gateway and one or more VPN connections. A VPN gateway provides an Internet access for a VPC and works together with the remote gateway in the local data center. A VPN connection uses IPsec encryption technology to connect the VPN gateway and the remote gateway to enable communication between the local data center and the VPC. The VPN connection allows you to quickly build secure hybrid cloud environments.

Advantages

  • Security
All data traffic from your site to the Open Telekom Cloud cloud datacenter is secured with state of the art encryption technology like IPsec and TLS protocols.
  • Availability
The remote servers in Open Telekom Cloud can be reached from your own location without using many different public EIPs. The VPN provides direct access to the VPC from your data center to the Open Telekom Cloud. You can expand your data center capacity transparently and use secure, reliable services on Open Telekom Cloud resources.
  • Scalability
A VPN is easy scalable. You can add a new users, sites, offices or partner-companies to the network. If it is necessary to relocate a remote office, it is very easy and cost effective to set up the new location.

Functionality

A VPN service connects your local company network to your Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) network through a secure IPsec connection. Data traffic between the two networks is encrypted by a VPN gateway and then decrypted by another VPN gateway on the other site. Your data is secured anytime when it travels through the internet.

  • Extending your data center to the cloud
If you want to build an enterprise hybrid cloud architecture, connecting your local data center to cloud resources using an encrypted tunnel over the Internet, create a VPN connection.
  • Streamlining provisioning and management
You can provision and manage a VPN connection easily, and a newly created VPN connection takes effect immediately.
  • Extending your applications to the cloud
You can use a VPN to connect a VPC to your data center, extending your data center to the VPC rapidly.

Usage Scenarios

Deploying a VPN to Connect a VPC to a Local Data Center

With a VPN between VPC and your traditional data center, you can easily use the ECSs and block storage resources in the cloud. Applications can be migrated to the cloud and additional web servers can be created to increase the computing capacity on a network. In this way, a hybrid cloud is built, which reduces IT O&M costs and protects enterprise core data from being leaked.

Deploying a VPN to Connect a VPC to Multiple Local Data Centers

With a VPN between VPC and multiple traditional data centers, you can easily use ECSs and block storage resources in the cloud. To connect multiple sites, ensure that the subnet CIDR blocks of each site involved in the VPN connection cannot overlap.

Cross-Region Interconnection between VPCs

In this scenario, a VPN tunnel is established between two VPCs in different regions to enable mutual access between the two VPCs.
