Resource Formation Service (RFS)

Resource Formation Service (RFS) is a final-state resource formation engine for cloud services. With RFS, users can automatically create cloud service resources in batches on the Open Telekom Cloud by simply describing the final state of the required resources. This helps users create, manage, and upgrade cloud service resources efficiently, securely, and consistently.

Terraform ecosystem (HCL and Provider) is fully supported by RFS. The templates utilize the open-source HCL syntax. RFS can manage the physical or logical system and service entities on the Open Telekom Cloud, such as databases, VPCs, pipelines and IAM roles.

RFS enhances the efficiency of resource management and mitigates the risks associated with changes in resource management.

Reasons for RFS in the Open Telekom Cloud

Icon composition of mouse pointer and buttons symbolize user-friendliness

Easy to use

  • One-click deployment of basic resources based on templates.
  • Fully managed service with no software to install, no actuators to prepare, no underlying files or data to manage.
Icon composition of padlock and protective shield symbolize security and reliability

Secure and reliable

  • Visualized audit, security, and compliance control policies prevent security risks caused by resource changes.
  • The idempotent effect of invoking a template for multiple times ensures that resource are not requested repeatedly.
  • Resource deployment rollback, resource status query, and resource operation trace are supported.

Compatibility and integration

  • Integration with mainstream cloud services on the Open Telekom Cloud.
  • Compatibility with HCL syntax eliminates an extra learning curve.

Key Features

Cloud-connected end devices and users ensure standardized resource management

Unified Resource Management

RFS automatically deploys specified cloud service resources based on the template which uses the HCL syntax. It enables developers and system maintainers to focus on core service logic and enjoy unified user experience in managing and creating required resources.

Stacks

A stack is a collection of cloud service resources. It is used to create, delete, update, and query all cloud service resources described in a template.

Execution plans

An execution plan offers a preview of stack changes by displaying a comparison between the current template and online resources. It also clearly shows the operations (such as addition, modification, and deletion) to be performed on resources and attributes during resource formation.

Templates

Templates are used to create resource stacks and execution plans that define cloud resources and configuration details and describe dependencies between resources.

Use Cases

One-click deployment

RFS uses templates to describe resources required by services in a unified manner. It helps you automate deployment or remove various resources through stacks. You can define many resource instances of different services and specifications in a template. RFS enables fast migration to cloud by automatic creation, quick deployment, and flexible configuration of resources.

Change review

Sensitive resource changes require multiple reviews and checks. Execution plans allow you to dry-run your templates. You can create and apply an execution plan to see details about resource changes in its result. You can decide whether to proceed with the changes based on the results of the execution plan to avoid service risks caused by resource changes.

DR replication

RFS allows you to manage templates and stacks. You can save reviewed templates and use them to deploy resources. You can create and deploy stacks based on saved templates to quickly recover services after disasters.
