Cloud Container Instance (CCI)

Cloud Container Instance (CCI) on the Open Telekom Cloud is a serverless container engine that provides a hassle-free way to run containerized applications using Kubernetes without having to create and manage server clusters. As a result, the operational overhead is reduced, and users can concentrate on building and operating their applications, ultimately driving business growth and success.

Typically, running containerized workloads on Kubernetes necessitates the initial creation of a Kubernetes server cluster. However, under the serverless model, the entire container deployment process is simplified. To deploy and operate applications, users are only required to specify their resource needs, such as the necessary CPU cores and memory space, while the cloud takes care of the maintenance and management of the underlying infrastructure and server clusters.

Reasons for Cloud Container Instance in the Open Telekom Cloud

Convenience

Containerized applications can be seamlessly deployed in a few steps by using console, kubectl, or Kubernetes APIs without the complexities of needing to create and manage Kubernetes cluster.

Cost-effectiveness

Resources consumed by workloads are billed on-demand and calculated in seconds. This granular pay-as-you-go billing approach ensures that you only pay for the exact resources you use, reducing unnecessary costs and optimizing budget allocation.

Performance & security

CCI leverages Kata containers and its virtualization acceleration technology to achieve virtual machine (VM) level isolation without compromising startup speed, enhancing the overall container experience for users. Pods start up within seconds to enable businesses to swiftly adapt to services changes and handle any traffic bursts.

Compatibility

CCI uses open-source technology and is compatible with native Kubernetes, Kata container and Docker APIs, and supports Docker images, allowing users to use familiar tools and workflows.

One-Stop Container Lifecycle Management

  • Thanks to the serverless framework employed by CCI, users can deploy and operate Kubernetes workloads without creating and managing server clusters.
  • Various interfaces (console, kubectl or Kubernetes APIs) can be used for the operation and maintenance of workloads.
  • Billing-per-second offers a flexible and efficient way to control consumed IT resources and budgets.

Cloud-Integration

Various network access modes and load balancing at both Layer 4 and Layer 7 are available to meet scenario-specific needs.

In addition, CCI interconnects with Elastic Volume Service (EVS), SFS Turbo and Object Storage Services (OBS) to store user data.

Fast Auto Scaling

Automatic elastic scaling can be accomplished within a mere second by using user-defined scaling policies. By using a flexible combination of these polices, traffic surge during peak hours can be easily dealt with.

Monitoring

The resources consumed by containers are monitored, including the CPU usage, memory usage, GPU compute usage, and GPU memory usage, from which you can determine the running status of the containers in real time.

Use Cases

Big Data and AI Computing

Currently, most big data and AI training applications (such as TensorFlow and Caffe) run in containerized mode. These applications are GPU intensive and require high-performance network and storage. In addition, as these applications are task-based, resources must be quickly allocated upon task creation and released upon task completion.

The following features make CCI suitable for these use cases:

  • Accelerated computing with heterogeneous GPUs
  • Large-scale, high-concurrency container creation and management
  • On-demand usage and billing
Scientific Computing

Scientific R&D in fields such as genomics and drug development require high-performance and high-density computing. In addition, scientific computing is generally task-based, and resources need to be quickly allocated and released. Therefore, a low-cost computing platform with automated O&M is required.

The following features make CCI suitable for these use cases:

  • High-performance computing and network, and high I/O storage
  • Resource scaling within seconds minimizes resource consumption.
  • No O&M required for clusters and servers, greatly reducing O&M costs.
  • On-demand usage and billing
DevOps/Continuous Delivery

Software development enterprises need a complete DevOps process from code submission to application deployment to improve the development efficiency. DevOps processes such as continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) are generally task-based computing and require quick resource allocation and release.

The following features make CCI suitable for these use cases:

  • Automation for the entire CI/CD process, with no cluster creation and maintenance required.
  • Image-based delivery, allowing for consistency between the development and production environments.
  • On-demand usage and billing

Services with Fluctuating Traffic

Some types of applications, such as live video, media information, e-commerce, and online education, have obvious service peaks and troughs. For these applications, resources need to be expanded rapidly during peak hours without breaking the bank.

The following features make CCI suitable for these use cases:

  • Fast scaling: CCI can quickly take over services from CCE to ensure uptime during peak hours.
  • Low-cost, flexible billing modes: When services are stable, they can be run on CCE and be periodically billed. During peak hours, additional services can be run on CCI and be billed based on usage. This mode greatly reduces costs.
