Open Telekom Cloud for Business Customers

The Cloud Kindergarten at the OpenStack Summit in Barcelona

by Frank Klöker and Oliver Klippel

The OpenStack Summit took place in Barcelona in the week from October 24-30, 2016. The Cloud Kindergarten was honored to take part in this fantastic event. Established by Frank Kloeker, the Cloud Kindergarten is a project that aims to teach us trainees and students how to work with an OpenStack cloud platform.

The contents focus largely on how to handle a cloud installation to create a platform as a service (PaaS). We are all from the Business Applications & Cloud Services unit of the Product Innovations department. As part of the DevOps team, we work to guarantee unbroken access to the platform.

Cloud Kindergarten in Barcelona: Excellent workshops, presentations, and talks

Frank Kloeker had the idea of expanding on the "open" side of things and sharing this process with the public in the form of a presentation. The contents of the work so far consist of a ref card drafted by Adriano Perri and information on installing an application in the cloud. The ref card presents an overview of the programs that we use and general explanations about how the platform works.

The goal we set ourselves was to showcase how we work and the learning process at the OpenStack Summit, so we had to make quite a few preparations: Draft our presentation, document information, submit material, and find a procedure that everyone was satisfied with. Our presentation was accepted for the vBrownBag sessions, giving us the opportunity to describe our work at an international event. This was a real honor for us.

On top of this, we also had the chance to take part in a wide range of workshops and sit in on other presentations, including a hands-on lab about setting up Magnum with Ansible. It was organized by Rackspace, and they did a fantastic job. Participants were issued access-enabled VMs in advance, which created identical conditions for everyone while at the same time making sure that they could fully reproduce the procedure being showcased.

We also had the opportunity to interview a number of Cloud providers at the marketplace and ask them to describe their experiences and highlights at the OpenStack Summit. We struck up conversations with representatives from the different companies, which meant we were in a position to hear even more views from other participants and service providers. It goes without saying that we will be making these interviews accessible to anyone interested.
