Virtual Private Cloud (VPC)

VPC as the basis for customized clouds

In cloud environments, the virtual resources of the various users need to be kept separate. To do so, users set up virtual private clouds. With a virtual private cloud, a cloud-internal IP address range is reserved for a tenant (contract), which only the user in question can access. This prevents other users from accessing the services, whether intentionally or by accident. As such, the virtual private cloud is the user’s own small cloud. Setting up a virtual private cloud is both an effective basic security measure and a prerequisite for using nearly all cloud resources. Every user needs at least one VPC.

Virtual Private Cloud in the Open Telekom Cloud

Software-defined networking is used in the Open Telekom Cloud. Among other benefits, this technology makes it possible to virtualize network resources within the cloud. Network isolation ensures that the network resources of individual users are fully separated from those of other users.

Furthermore, within their own VPCs users can set up multidimensional access protection by using security groups and firewalls, thereby limiting access in accordance with their requirements. By configuring the network and the DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) service, the virtual private cloud can also be connected to other networks, including of course the Internet. This is done by opening the corresponding ports within the Open Telekom Cloud. Resources or services can be made available to certain user groups via IP VPN or Elastic IP.

The Open Telekom Cloud supports the IPv6 protocol and destination/source network address translation (DNAT/SNAT). With the latter, multiple private IP addresses (in the Open Telekom Cloud) can be accessed via a shared public IP address. SNAT is available via an integrated NAT Gateway. Up to four different time zones can be set up in a subnet via network time protocol (NTP) servers. With VPC Flow Logs, the data streams within a VPC can be monitored and also stored and analyzed in the Log Tank Service.
