Relational Database Service (RDS)
When it comes to the structured storage and use of data, databases have become virtually indispensable. Experts often use relational databases thanks to the large variety of possibilities they offer. Clouds enable databases to be used “as a service”: database software and the corresponding hardware infrastructure is packed at the push of a button and high-availability databases are provided in a matter of minutes – for tests, development or continuous operation.
Relational Database Service (RDS) is a cloud-based web service that is reliable, scalable, easy to manage, and ready for immediate use. RDS provides a comprehensive performance monitoring system, multi-level security protection measures, and a professional database management platform, allowing you to easily set up and scale a relational database. RDS supports database services such as MySQL, PostgreSQL and Microsoft SQL Server.

On the RDS console you can perform almost all necessary tasks - no programming required. RDS offers an automatic backup function and point-in-time recovery for the previous 35 days, supports high availability even across different availability zones, and a mirrored standby database can be added to the primary database which can be expanded to up 4 TB during ongoing operation. It is also possible to upgrade a single-instance database to an active/standby database. RDS is available directly via an Elastic IP if desired.
Billing is based on the hourly price of the selected virtual machines (VMs), while additional storage space for backups and images is billed in accordance with the type used for the respective storage variant.

RDS uses static and tablespace encryption to encrypt the data to be stored. Encryption keys are managed by the Key Management Service (KMS).

RDS resources can be adjusted flexibly at any time based on your requirements, meaning you pay for only what you use. Cloud Eye can monitor the changes of database pressure and data storage space and within you can adjust DB instance classes accordingly.

With RDS, you can choose your preferred database engine from a variety of options, including MySQL, PostgreSQL and Microsoft SQL Server. This allows you to stay flexible when setting up, operating, and scaling SQL deployments in the cloud, and means you have all of their respective advantages at your fingertips.

RDS supports MySQL, one of the world's most popular open-source relational databases. It works with the Linux, Apache, and Perl/PHP/Python (LAMP) model to provide efficient web solutions. RDS for MySQL is reliable, scalable, inexpensive, easy to manage, and immediately ready for use.

PostgreSQL is an open-source object-relational database management system with an emphasis on extensibility and standards compliance. It applies to business-oriented online transaction processing (OLTP) scenarios and supports NoSQL (JSON, XML, or hstore) and geographic information system (GIS) data types. The postgis plugin is supported.

Microsoft SQL Server is a well-established commercial database with mature enterprise-class architecture. It supports one-stop deployment, ensuring key O&M services and lowering labor costs. It is reliable, scalable, inexpensive, easy to manage, and ready for immediate use with RDS.
