OpenStack Summit: Bimodale IT and success stories

by Andreas Falkner, Kurt Garloff, Clemens Hardewig and Götz Reinhäckel

The OpenStack Summit is taking place in Austin from April 24 to 29, 2016. Our experts Andreas Falkner, Kurt Garloff, Dr. Clemens Hardewig and Dr. Götz Reinhäckel are there and have summarized their first impressions in this article.

The total of 7,500 participants from 62 countries show how mature and widespread the platform on which solutions including the Open Telekom Cloud is based has become. In a varied program, experiences and applications relating to OpenStack will be shared, developers will get together to drive forward their projects and companies will use the platform to present their products and applications to the community. It is the cooperation with developers from a diverse range of backgrounds on open projects that makes the OpenStack community so strong.

The keynote speeches on the first day focused on the challenges that cloud technology and OpenStack pose for IT. The speakers focused on disruptive changes and bimodal IT – such as the interaction of the “old” IT world with the new world of cloud IT.

This is also confirmed by Gartner, which clearly sees a coexistence of the traditional model (ITIL) with the disruptive, cloud-native model (accept instability!). A rethink is strongly encouraged in terms of operating models, since only 10 percent of a successful OpenStack implementation is influenced by technology, but 90 percent by processes and people.

According to Mirantis, 35 percent of operational issues are caused by operating models that have not been adapted. The question of whether OpenStack is now ready for production no longer arises, as 65 percent of deployments are already live today.

Three challenges

In his keynote speech, Jonathan Bryce, CEO of the OpenStack Foundation, formulated three core challenges to successfully managing the increasing diversification of IT:

  1. Standardized platforms
  2. New applications need old applications
  3. Clear prioritization of competitive requirements

AT&T wins the Super User Award

OpenStack has now reached 50 percent of the Fortune 100 companies as a platform, many of which are already live. The presentation by AT&T, which has developed its entire network control and deployment on OpenStack and has already rolled out OpenStack Cloud in 75 data centers worldwide, was particularly noteworthy.

By 2022, AT&T aims to control 75 percent of its entire data traffic using OpenStack and then roll it out in over 1,000 regions. Consequently, AT&T also won the Super User Award 2015, a prize awarded annually by the OpenStack Foundation to companies that make a decisive contribution to OpenStack.

SAP is doing interesting things on clouds with the HANA Cloud Platform; their keynote speech focused on the Internet of Things. SAP is also implementing the Cloud Foundry PaaS layer on the OpenStack Cloud, on which HCP and its applications run.
