How to deploy a DNS cluster on Open Telekom Cloud

This article is meant as a quick configuration manual of a Linux DNS server using BIND on Open Telekom Cloud. This document helps Open Telekom Cloud users build a private Domain Name System (DNS) in Virtual Private Clouds (VPC) to resolve inner/public domain name for ECS servers. We will not go into details of what Domain Name Service, nor how DNS works.

Rather we simply give a guide about how to build a DNS server step by step. BIND is the most widely used Domain Name System software on the Internet. On Unix-like operating systems it is the de facto standard. The software was originally designed at the University of California Berkeley (UCB) in the early 1980s. The name originates as an acronym of Berkeley Internet Name Domain, reflecting the application's use within UCB.

The software consists, most prominently, of the DNS server component, called named, a contracted form of name daemon. In addition the suite contains various administration tools, and a DNS resolver interface library. The latest version of BIND is BIND 9, first released in 2000.

Recommended architecture of DNS servers

The following figure shows the typical architecture of a VPC across two availability zones using DNS servers.

The main characteristics are:

  • DNS cluster supports single VPC cross AZ with 2 subnet
  • Two DNS instances are in different subnets
  • BIND is being used to ensure data synchronization between 2 nodes
  • Client servers can configure IP addresses of both DNS servers at the same time
  • To control the access permission NSG (Network Security Group) is being used

How to do the set-up

For the DNS service deployment in Open Telekom Cloud, use the following procedure. First, in preparing, we setup ECS server with bind for using. Then, we have multiple steps guide you configuring bind to resolve inner/public domain name request. After that, we do some checking and test work before start DNS service. Also, we provide a guide for some daily operation and maintenance work like add or remove some DNS records.
